This historic estate, long managed by the legendary and larger-than-life Bernd Philippi, dates back to the 1700s. But it was the work of Bernd Phillipi over the last 30 years that has solidified the winery's reputation as one of the best in Germany. With the help of vineyard manager Dominick Sona and cellarmaster Franziska Schmitt, Phillippi produces wines reflect an attitude of winemaking more akin to the 1900's than the 2000's. In the vineyard, no irrigation, fertilizers or herbicides are ever used, and systemic treatments against pests or fungal illness are kept to a minimum, only in the rare cases when necessary. Nothing is ever added or subtracted to the wine, and sulfur is only added moderately after alcoholic fermentation and before bottling. The result: dry, mineral, and unforgettable wines with notes of ripe stone fruit, lime zest, and white flowers.
